About Us

Wigan STARS evolved into its own charity from the Wigan Mencap Gateway Club and obtained Its charitable registration number in January 2010.

Wigan STARS offers young people and adults with learning disabilities and profound and
Multiple disabilities the Opportunity to develop social skills through planned activities at
community venues along with activities planned within our base at Hallgate House.

Through these planned activities it allows us to raise awareness to members of the public
to see our members Abilities not their Disability.

Our Core Principles

Wigan STARS are committed to “offering the best care and support outside the family home”. We do this by prioritising the safety and well-being of our members and developing an open positive partnership with parents and carers. We value diversity and Inclusion.

We believe that it’s time we take our focus off disabilities and place it on capabilities, so we see the person first.

Wigan STARS believe our Motto of Wigan Ability not Disability is developed by the personal advancement and personal development of people with a learning disability through greater leisure opportunities by promoting choice and independence and encouraging full participation integration and involvement within the community.

Wigan STARS believes THAT ALL PEOPLE WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS AS OTHER MEMBERS OF SOCIETY.

We Believe All our Members have the Right To:

We Accept that with every individual right there is an Area of Responsibility.

The Charity’s objects (the Objects) are:

1. The relief for the public benefit, of people with learning disabilities and their carers, dependents and families by provision of facilities for respite, recreation and other leisure time occupation in the interests of social welfare with the object of enhancing their quality of life.

2. The advancement of education and training of people with learning disabilities and their carers, dependents and families in particular, but not exclusively, to develop their work and life skills by developing, delivering and evaluating accessible learning opportunities”.
